September’s a big month for the shows, kicking off with Maison & Objet in Paris. As always the design team catch a fleeting glimpse of Gare du Nord and the streets of Paris as we head off to the exhibition centre close to the airport at Paris Nord Villepinte. It’s also one of the main buying trips for the showrooms in London and Barbados and there are seven large halls to get through.
It’s always good to see directional ideas with colour and to be inspired. So many pretty pastels around the show with turquoise making a big comeback. The most relevant accent colour is orange made all the more beautiful combined with interesting metallics. Designs are whimsical with birds and birdcages everywhere around the show.
The use of recycled materials has been taken to a whole new level with some of the most exciting brands creating stunning furniture and accessories. Using traditional craft skills combined with authentic decorative materials the results are staggering. Here’s a list of the materials we’ve drooled over – mother of pearl, petrified wood, horn, selenite stone, semi precious stones and eggshell.
Maison is THE show for sourcing planters which are very much part of interiors and exteriors for projects happening in the Caribbean. This fabulous display is based around imposing fibre glass shapes which are ideal to keep the weight down which is so important from a shipping and installing point of view. The outer ‘skins’ are crafted in wonderfully organic materials such as oyster shells, pencil graphite, pine bark, burnt and polished eggshell, lava and coconut. A recycling paradise.
Wall art is everywhere around the exhibition. This piece features metal lily pads and blooms and pottery fish.
There’s so much to report on at the show so we’ll be posting at the end of today’s visit too. Time to close the iPad and join the crowds at Gare du Nord !
