Planning the Christmas window at our West London showroom is one of the tasks I look forward to each year with great anticipation – whether based around a traditional Christmas tree or something more unusual, it’s the perfect opportunity to combine beautiful fabrics and home furnishings alongside gifts and smaller decorations to create a real feast for the eyes! This year in particular I felt the need to bring a touch of Christmas magic so am very happy to present our ‘Christmas angel’ to you today!

Jenny Blanc - London Showroom Christmas Window DisplayThe beautiful sheer fabric by Sahco which forms the body of our angel caught my eye because of the clever use of matt sequins which add depth and interest without being too glitzy. The wallpaper behind is by Harlequin and is from their latest collection. Unusual wallpapers, particularly those incorporating metallic elements, were one of the most interesting trends to gain momentum this year – we have some fantastic new additions to our samples library at the West London showroom which are already proving popular. Teal was another strong trend in 2016 and was the perfect choice for this year’s window – combined with warm metallics, glassware and natural textures including faux fur and branches it feels both glamorous and festive.

Jenny Blanc - London Showroom Christmas Window Display Mood Board

In store we have an incredible selection of decorations, perfect for adding that last minute finishing touch to your home. Home fragrance by Aromatique and Castelbel are perfect for setting the scene for festive entertaining whilst an original selection of baubles and ornaments will trim the tree wonderfully!

I want to take this opportunity to wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! We look forward to welcoming you in 2017 with our sale, starting on Saturday 7th January at our West London Showroom.

Jenny Blanc welcomes Shakieta Marshall to the team in Barbados…

Jenny Blanc Blog - Supports Princes Trust International

Prince’s Trust International is a youth charity recently established in Barbados with the aim of helping disadvantaged young people on the island gain vital skills to move into education, training or employment. The Trust, formally launched last November in Malta by its President HRH The Prince of Wales, has partnered in Barbados with the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Youth for the first pilots of the ‘’Get Into’’ employability programme on the island. Jenny Blanc were delighted to support Prince’s Trust International by offering a work experience opportunity at our Barbados showroom during September 2016.

Jenny Blanc Blog - Interior Design Barbados

Shakieta Marshall has a strong interest in Interior Design and is very creative both as a current student of the Barbados Community College’s Art and Design programme and in her own time. Prince’s Trust International’s ‘’Get Into’’ programme provided the opportunity for Shakieta to begin to bridge the gap between education and employment. Shakieta spent a week and a half at our showroom in St. James where she gained hands on experience with some of the most important areas of the business. Whilst based in the showroom Shakieta assisted the team with pricing, cleaning and greeting customers as well as filing and organising fabric samples. Shakieta also visited our warehouse to measure, count and catalogue the fabric stock, giving her an overview of some of the practicalities of running a design and retail showroom.

Design Director Sue Thomas-Richardson who is Barbadian herself was based at the showroom during this time and was able to conduct training with Shakieta on floor planning, drafting, how to work effectively with design clients as well as taking Shakieta on a site visit to a West Coast residence. Shakieta put her knowledge and training to the test drafting a lamp and shade for a customer request.

Jenny Blanc Blog - Barbados Showroom

The work experience placement was a real success and Jenny Blanc would like to thank Shakieta for all of her hard work. We’re happy to report that Shakieta will be staying on with us, working in the showroom on Saturdays. We look forward to her continued development towards a successful career in Interior Design!

You don’t need to go to the West End…

Oriental influences at our West London showroom this autumn…

Jenny Blanc - Showroom London at Autumn Time

This autumn we have taken inspiration from a beautiful pair of antique oriental lamps for our autumn/winter window display. The lamps have a ceramic bases in stunning cerulean blue with burnished gold hand painted cherry blossom branches. These are complemented by bespoke knife pleat shades with a silk wrapped bead trim. This gorgeous colour combination is perfect for this time of year in the UK as temperatures begin to drop and we look to our interiors for warmth, comfort and a touch of luxury. Blue and burnished gold combined with other earth colours form the basis of this year’s design which includes an unusual textured wallcovering by Arte, stunning eglomise mirror and a contemporary, oriental style console table.

The Jenny Blanc tub chair is one of the most popular and versatile designs on display at our West London showroom and can be ordered in fabric of your choice. It’s currently shown in ‘Coco Tweed’ by Nobilis which is complemented by a bespoke pair of cushions, exclusive to Jenny Blanc, with an ornately embroidered border and antique trim.

The floor lamp is by Heathfield & Co. and was first shown at Decorex in September. We immediately chose it for our West London showroom because of its elegant design – perfect for transitional or more contemporary interiors. The curtain fabric by William Yewoard is reminiscent of traditional oriental china in shades of white and blue. This fabric is excellent value and works beautifully for curtains and cushions.

Finishing touches include our fabulous coloured glassware which is new to the showroom for autumn, a bespoke tasselled pouf in complementary shades of blue and gold, a fabulous pair of ceramic birds and – very important at this time of year – a variety of candles perfect for creating a soft ambient glow as the evening draws in!

Decorex is one of my favourite events in the autumn trade show calendar and one that I look forward to with much anticipation. It’s a wonderful opportunity to meet with some of my favourite designers and see their new collections first hand – nothing beats touching and feeling a product and as a designer, it’s very important to see fabrics, wallcoverings and furniture on a large scale. There were some stunning offerings this year from some of our longstanding suppliers including Baker & Gray, Tamerisk, Robert Langford and Heathfield & Co. but I was also surprised to discover so many exciting new brands – many of whom we will be welcoming to our West London and Barbados showrooms over the coming weeks!

Today I would like to share a few of the things that caught my eye this year. Below you’ll find stunning fabrics, contemporary lighting to spark the imagination and one or two exciting new products which are the perfect finishing touch to give your home a little lift this autumn and are coming soon to the UK showroom! I hope you enjoy – Jenny

Jenny Writes: Thrilled to be featured in The English Home magazine again…

Jenny Blanc Blog - English Home Feature

Jenny Blanc Blog - Jenny Blanc Picture
Jenny Blanc

The English Home is one of my favourite magazines and one that I really look forward to reading each month. It’s a perfect balance between seasonal inspiration and in-depth articles that I find tremendously enjoyable so I was so pleased to be featured in the August issue alongside Jane Churchill, Katharine Pooley, Joanna Wood and Nicky Haslam in an article all about the importance of details in the home.

Here’s a peek at my contribution – you can read the full article over on our website here.

Jenny Blanc Blog - Glittering Dining Room Crystal Trim

‘’Paying attention to the details can make the difference between a room which is simply nice and a room that takes your breath away. The word ‘detail’ encompasses so much – whether it’s hardware for doors or cabinetry, a beaded trim on cushions or soft furnishings, or simply the clever and thoughtful juxtaposition of colours and textures – it can be difficult to know where to start. For me, the function of a room is the natural starting point. In a grand, traditional house we added more glitter to an already glittering dining room in the form of a gorgeous crystal trim along the leading edge of the silk curtains (pictured above). These were further enhanced by a beautifully carved and gilded bespoke decorative pelmet.’’

Jenny Blanc Blog - Monochromatic Scheme

‘’In the project above we maintained a monochromatic scheme to complement the floor and intensify the drama. The large circular holdbacks [above right] provide an eye-catching contrast to the vertically striped fabric.’’

Jenny Blanc Blog - Beautiful Hardware Bespoke Furniture

‘’We love to introduce beautiful hardware to bespoke pieces of furniture old and new. These mickel-and-horn handles [right] look perfect against this walnut-and-leather bespoke desk in a chic London bachelor flat. For those looking to elevate an existing piece of furniture, changing the handles is the quickest way to a total transformation. Look for unusual materials that echo the shapes and textures in the rest of the room.’’

Tropical Inspiration…

Jenny Blanc Blog - Pierre Frey Fabrics

This week we have three beautiful printed fabrics to share – each taken from schemes for tropical homes that we are currently working on. The fabric above is ‘Miami’ by Pierre Frey and is the perfect choice for a traditional and elegant Caribbean property. The exotic flowers and leaves are depicted in vibrant shades of green, orange and violet adding a feeling of tropical heat and vitality. This fabric pairs perfectly with traditional dark mahogany furniture which helps ground the scheme in sophisticated, earthy tones.

Jenny Blanc Blog - Manuel Canovas Fabrics

‘Salina’ by Manuel Canovas (pictured above) has a much more contemporary feel with painterly fish shown here in shades of blue and purple. Pairing the fabric with woodwork in a pale pine finish adds to the contemporary mood and keeps the whole scheme light and fresh.

Jenny Blanc Blog - Nina Campbell Fabrics

‘Barbary Toile’ by Nina Campbell has an undeniably traditional feel but by bringing in more contemporary elements, like white wicker furniture and textured fabrics in the same coral colour, we have created a scheme with depth and interest – perfect for a more transitional property.

All fabrics pictured are suitable for use in tropical climates – for more information or to place an order please call + 44 (0)20 8943 4144.

The Classics Collection by Colefax & Fowler

Jenny Blanc Blog - Colefax and Fowler Fabric Cushion

We have been using Colefax and Fowler’s fabrics, wallpapers and trimmings in our design projects and at the UK showroom since we first opened our doors 20 years ago and they are as popular now as ever before. Today we’re very excited to share our favourite designs from the new ‘classics’ collection which epitomise elegant but relaxed English style. All the fabrics pictured below are available to order from our UK showroom – call us on +44 (0)20 8943 3133 or better still, pop in to see us at 59 High Street, Teddington, London, TW11 8HA and let us show them to you in person and take advantage of the expert advice of our Just Rooms service.

The enduring beauty of these designs, exclusive to Colefax and Fowler, lies in the draughtsmanship of the exquisitely drawn patterns, the quality of the printing and Colefax’s unique colour palette; often offbeat, but always sophisticated, with shades of crushed raspberry, pale greens or faded greyish-blues. The resulting colours are subtle and easy to live with – ideal for contemporary interiors as well as still blending with the style of yesteryear, and encapsulating the restrained elegance forever associated with Colefax and Fowler.

Jenny Blanc Blog - Room Scheme

Jenny Blanc Blog - Jenny Blanc End of Summer
Jenny Blanc

With August and the warmth of summer finally here in the UK it feels like the perfect time to share this light and airy idea for a beautiful breakfast room or conservatory. This pretty scheme is based around four gorgeous fabrics by Jane Churchill who is ever popular at our London showroom. The fabric pictured top right features a graceful, flowing ‘sweet angel’ vine which would look perfect with a natural rope tie back. The printed fabric in the bottom right hand corner (pictured here alongside a beautiful white wooden planter by Capital Garden Products) is the classic ‘Anouska’ design in red and green. Along with contrasting green piping it would make a gorgeous cushion for a window seat or bench – the perfect spot to sip coffee and read the papers!

Simon Oxley is one of our top choices for outdoor furniture – the Rissington pedestal table and chairs pictured bottom right would look fantastic in a soft white or pale cream paint finish. For the seat cushions we have chosen ‘Layla’ by Jane Churchill – a small scale design in green which coordinates perfectly with the other fabrics in the scheme.

The mirror sample pictured top left is an exclusive design by Jenny Blanc and handmade to order by Patrick Ireland. A stunning lantern by Vaughan in a hand painted, soft green finish would bring light to the finished room. Last but not least, I couldn’t resist adding these sweet little espresso cups by Bulgari – they’re the perfect shade of softest pink and green and the last ones currently available at our UK showroom!

Adding colour and comfort with rugs…

Jenny Blanc Blog - Goats courtesy of Misha rugs

Think about furnishing a room and the chances are a rug won’t be the first thing that springs to mind! In our experience though most rooms will benefit from a beautiful rug – weather it’s perfectly neutral, sitting quietly alongside the other furnishings or discreetly interesting, playing with different textures underfoot. At the other end of the scale a rug can be colourful and bold, acting as a piece of art for the floor. There are practical considerations too of course – a busy passageway will require something very different to a formal sitting room but still needs to look good so the choice of material is crucial. Today we’re excited to introduce you to misha rugs – a new supplier of beautiful mohair rugs which will be coming to our UK showroom soon, as well as a few of our favourite rug designs that are available now.

The beautiful Angora goats pictured above are reared in South Africa and produce a fine mohair yarn. Mohair is a remarkable fibre with exceptional properties – soft and silky, with a lustrous sheen, mohair retains its gloss even with intensive use and is resistant to felting. The curly long hair results in a robust, strong yarn with natural spring. The whiteness of the yarn and high dye absorbency allows fantastic clarity of colour. One of the most durable of yarns, mohair is stain resistant and easily cleaned whilst being naturally flame retardant.

Jenny Blanc Blog - Mohair colour samples

The image above shows just a handful of the 40 colours available – these samples demonstrate the ‘flat weave’ style, made from 100% combed mohair which is hand woven. Available in contemporary bespoke geometric designs, the stunning range of colours make it possible to create a bespoke rug which perfectly matches the other fabrics and furnishings in your room.

The images below show samples from the ‘naturals’ range by Misha Rugs. These are made from 100% uncombed mohair, handwoven in six harmonious muted colours and five subtle two colour blends. Contemporary geometric designs combining different colours are a further option.

Jenny Blanc Blog - Mohair natural range samples

Both the flat weave and the uncombed mohair rugs feel luxuriously decadent underfoot and are a great option for bedside rugs. We’re particularly excited about the breadth of beautiful colours that are available in the flatweave range, making them very versatile. We’re looking forward to stocking them at our UK showroom soon!

Jenny Blanc Blog - Nobilis rug samples

The Nobilis rug sample pictured above is called ‘Coco’ and has a contemporary look blending wool and viscose with a gold lurex thread which adds a subtle sparkle. Metallic touches in wallpaper and fabric have become more popular in recent years so it’s very exciting to see the addition of metallic to floor coverings also.

Jenny Blanc Blog - GP & J Baker Kamu rug samples

The GP&J Baker ‘Kamu’ rug is a new design and already proving to be very popular. The pattern is embossed with an interesting texture, combining iridescent and matt fibres in subtle and neutral colours. The interlocking diamond design has a loose, organic feel, reminiscent of water. Perfect for a light and airy, contemporary living room.

Jenny Blanc Blog - Kravet Barbara Barry rug samples

The beautiful rug samples above are by Barbara Barry for Kravet. Made from 100% bamboo silk, they’re perfect for our design projects in Barbados and other climates where wool can be affected by the damp and humid conditions. The rugs are hand loomed giving them a beautiful variegated appearance and just enough interest whilst blending harmoniously into the background.

Caribbean Harvest Summer Blog

By Tyra Woodroffe

The summer months are officially upon us with warmer weather and the joy of the summer harvest! During this time Barbados is being rejuvenated after the dry season with the welcomed rains of the wet season. Days very often begin sunny and bright, are punctuated by cooling showers then end with colorfully painted skies at dusk.

All the while an abundance of rich flora is springing forth, such as mangoes, Bajan ackees, avocados and sea grapes. The rains encourage a revival of these local fruits and the entirety of the island’s expanse begins to appear even more beautifully lush. The beautiful Flamboyant trees are now in full flower all over the island as if to welcome the Summer

Coupled with the jubilance of the Crop Over festival, which marks the end of the sugar cane harvest, Barbados is now teeming with energy and activity.

The festival attracts numbers of visitors to Barbados’ shores every year as it is the perfect time to experience “Bajan” culture at its best. Local music telling satirical and celebratory stories can be heard across the radio waves and is the basis for phenomenal parties and parades. A rich display of colour is exhibited throughout the festival, from our indigenous cuisine to elaborate costumes.

All a reflection of the splendor of our natural environment, therefore it is only natural that we are now more than ever inspired to find creative ways to add a dose of tropical flair to our summer décor as well! So many of our favorite suppliers have come out with collections these last few months that employ colour and motifs borrowed from the exuberance of a Caribbean climate.

Jenny Writes… Settling in for summer

Jenny Blanc Blog - Jenny in Summer

Summer might have got off to a rainy start here in the UK but my garden has never looked better! Each year I choose a different colour scheme for the flowers which keeps the garden feeling new and exciting and creates a beautiful, harmonious effect. This year I have chosen pale mauves, soft pinks, blues and whites which look vibrant and fresh alongside all the different shades of green.

Once your garden is in bloom make the most of your flowers by bringing them into your home! Last month I shared some ideas for smaller floral arrangements that you can easily create for yourself and are the perfect way to enjoy the geraniums, spray roses and abundance of fresh herbs currently in season. For summer parties and outdoor entertaining a small trug like the one pictured below or other small wicker baskets make the perfect container for trailing floral table top arrangements. I always have a few small flower pots planted up for this purpose and simply return them to the garden afterwards. Umbrellas are of course essential for keeping the sun off on warmer days but providing much needed shelter during inevitable summer showers! For parties I often hire in a large umbrella which is a perfect solution for a smaller garden like mine.

Jenny Blanc Blog - Small Floral TrugJenny Blanc Blog - Floral ArrangementSpeaking of small things, I love to collect decorative ornaments like bird baths and small sculptures which look charming peeping out between the gaps in plants. The beautiful urn pictured below is an antique – as you can see by its beautifully rustic patina. To me, a classic piece like this always looks better in its natural state – this year I have planted it with mauve petunias and blue lobelia which drape and trail beautifully, creating a gorgeous summer display.

Jenny Blanc Blog - Floral Urn Display Jenny Blanc Blog - Bird SculpturesThe beginning of July always feels like the right time to give garden furniture a good clean and take stock of what needs replacing. New cushions or a brightly coloured throw are an easy way to give your existing furniture a fresh new look and will mean that you’re ready for when the warmer weather arrives in earnest! For ambient evening lighting glass hurricanes like the one you can just glimpse below look stunning with pillar candles, nestled amongst the plants.

Jenny Blanc Blog - Floral Displays Jenny Blanc Blog - Refreshing Summer Drink

And finally, here is a fun idea to help keep you cool this summer! Slice the top and bottom of a cucumber then with a potato peeler, cut wafer thin slices straight into a smart jug filled with chilled water. Top with ice cubes and serve. For parties, homemade ice lollies are always a welcome surprise – try blending fresh raspberries with mint or a mixture of freshly squeezed orange and lemon juice. Then all that will remain is to put your feet up and enjoy this beautiful time of the year!

Tyra Woodroffe is our Design Showroom Assistant in Barbados and the winner of the inaugural Jenny Blanc Design Scholarship, in partnership with the Barbados Community College. Before we bid her farewell as she begins an exciting new chapter (furthering her design education in New York) Tyra has a few words to share about her time with the Jenny Blanc team!

As I approach my last few weeks with Jenny Blanc Interiors, I reflect fondly on my time as the first design scholarship winner. It has been an exciting journey of change from being a curious design student, to someone who has been able to witness firsthand, the processes, skill and dedication it takes to run a successful, inspirational design practice. And to believe that it all began almost two years ago!

My start at Jenny Blanc was a wonderful one with my time at the London showroom and design studio. Having the opportunity to experience travel is incredibly enriching in itself, as it encourages personal growth and expands one’s knowledge substantially. Added to that was the great hospitality and mentorship I was fortunate to experience in my 6 months with the UK Team.  In such a creative field, actually being able to see, feel and interact with all the aspects that make a beautiful scheme come together is invaluable. And while with the UK design team lead by Design director Sue Thomas, I was able to witness the decision making process in an environment where access to a plethora of resources such as fabric, lighting and furniture is unlimited.

Although this time abroad was so stimulating, eventually homesickness set in and I happily returned to Barbados ready to take on second leg of the learning experience. The lovely Barbadian showroom provided a setting for me to find out all about retail, visual merchandising and installations as we manage local projects.  The Barbadian team lead by Caribbean Director Emma Blanc have provided a unique shopping experience on the island with products both local and from around the globe.

Even after the prescribed one year duration of the scholarship had elapsed, the team was gracious enough to keep me on as the Assistant Showroom Manager where I’ve had such an unforgettable time. Every site visit, every satisfied shopper and every trade show have further solidified my passion for design. It was only natural that I take the next step and pursue even more experience and higher education for this career path. I am therefore, off once again for a full B.Sc Degree in Interior Design from an accredited New York university.

Despite excitedly anticipating this new chapter, is not without some sadness that I leave the fantastic Jenny Blanc establishment after having nestled so comfortably into its embrace. But I do so with heaps of affection and gratitude for my colleagues and confident that I’ve been equipped with an impenetrable foundation for the future of my interior design craft.
